Reinforced moment‐resisting glulam bolted connection with coupled long steel rod with screwheads for modern timber frame structures

Abstract Currently, there is no “timber moment frame structural system,” as the basic glulam beam‐to‐column connections (usually represented by bolted with slotted‐in steel plates) offer limited rotational stiffness such that they are usually treated pin connections. This paper proposes an innovative type of moment‐resisting connection reinforced long rods screwheads (LSRSs) and self‐tapping screws (STSs). The motivation to provide a stiff yet resilient could possibly be used for mid‐rise timber system without need shear walls or braces. Six specimens different diameters LSRSs were designed experimentally tested explore their stiffness, capacities, hysteretic moment‐rotation responses, associated failure modes. Results indicated proposed not only satisfying resistance, but also energy dissipation fast repairability related seismic resilience. design procedures recommendations provided based on results. presented experimental study serves handy reference future designs applications in practical engineering projects.
